DCS’s varsity cheerleading squad competed for the first time ever on Feb. 6 at Mohonasen High School’s Suburban Council Cheer Competition, testing their skills against five other teams.

“The cheerleaders worked tirelessly to perfect their routine for this one day,” said coach Christina Stryjek. “They did an amazing job hitting all their stunts, jumps, cheers and dances. They had a great season, and although they didn't place in the top two, they came away from the experience with great respect for each other and the sport and are excited about next year.”

Stryjek thanked the DCS Board of Education and Athletic Director Penny Hardenstine for “supporting our dream to be a competition cheer team and our goal of going to our first competition. Without them none of this would have been possible.”

According to Hardenstine, "DCS has always had cheerleaders, and there have always been competitions for club squads. However, this is the first year that the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Section 2 have recognized cheerleading as a sport. At DCS, our squads have cheered at home basketball games but have not competed, even as a club team, until now.

"This was the first Competitive Cheer event that we have attended. Because they are now recognized as a sport, cheer squads will now be eligible to compete in sectional competitions."
