A love of trains, a wish granted and an ambassadorship

Dec. 1, 2016

Jacob GalvinJacob Galvin is all about trains, from setting up colorful scale models in his home to photographing the long, lumbering freight lines that roll through his community and beyond. Thanks to Make-A-Wish Northeast New York, the DCS 7th grader and his family took to the rails this past summer for a dream trip across the western United States.

Their stops included the city of Chicago and Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton national parks. When asked what was the best part of the trip, Jacob replied, "All of it."

With his wish granted and illness behind him, Jacob is now giving back and spreading the good word. Named by Make-A-Wish as one of six local Wish Ambassadors, he participated in a TV commercial taping and the Nov. 17 Kick-off Ceremony for the 2016 Adopt-A-Wish campaign at Crossgates Mall.

The Adopt-A-Wish campaign features local Wish Ambassadors, like Jacob, whose wishes have been granted by the local chapter. The granted wishes are featured on paper star ornaments offered for a donation at locations such as area shopping malls, banks and schools. At Duanesburg Elementary School, they will be offered by the Community Service Club from Dec. 5-16, and at Duanesburg Jr./Sr. High School, the Leo Club will be offering them beginning Dec. 19.

The  Adopt-A-Wish campaign is Make-A-Wish's largest fundraiser and enables the organization to grant a significant number of wishes for area children with life-threatening medical conditions.

When asked about his role in the Adopt-A-Wish campaign, Jacob said, "I'd like to say thank you to everyone who contributes to Make-A-Wish."

Make-A-Wish Northeast New York serves the 15 counties that comprise the 518 area code and is a local chapter of Make-A-Wish America.

His favorite railroad line is the Norfolk Southern because he "likes the way they look."
