DCS mourns the passing of Joe Bena

Feb. 17, 2018

The Duanesburg Central School District community is saddened to hear of this morning's passing of Joe Bena.

Superintendent Frank Macri noted Joe's reputation for not only leading the school's wrestling team and wrestlers to sectional and state championships, but also for bringing out the best in athletes as people. In his honor, the new high school auditorium will carry on the name of Joe Bena.

"When Joe was in the building, students appeared from everywhere to shake his hand and say, 'Hello, Coach'," said Chris Crowley, retired superintendent. "Joe led by example and taught everyone what it meant to respect and be respected. His athletes knew academics came first and often had study sessions prior to practice."

A few years ago, the high school's MOCC multi-purpose room was renamed Joe Bena Hall in tribute. "Joe was honored to see his name there and in his words, humbled by it," Crowley said. "With the recent capital project, Joe Bena Hall turned into the new Learning Commons library and media center, and the auditorium will now carry on his name. Sadly, we have to hope Joe will see his name from above when the new Joe Bena Auditorium is finally completed this spring.

"Joe may have physically left us, but happy memories of the man we all came to love and respect will live on forever as our students and wrestlers study and practice in Joe Bena Auditorium for years to come. We will always cherish what Joe taught us all about being good people and working to our full potential."

Macri and Crowley said, "Our hearts go out to Joe's family to know Joe has left a huge void, but also a legacy of respect and love here at Duanesburg Central Schools forever."
