Weekends are time to help others

Nov. 2, 2017

What do Duanesburg's Leo Club members do during the weekend? In late September and early October, they could be found collecting donations outside NBT Bank on Route 20 to benefit visually and hearing impaired individuals and those impacted by this fall's hurricanes.

"The students partnered with the Duane Lions Club to raise $807 for their annual White Cane collection during the weekend of Sept. 29," Leo Club Advisor Karen Kanarkiewicz said. "The funds are earmarked by the Lions Club to help the visually and hearing impaired.

"At DCS, the Lions Club provides vision screening equipment and vouchers for eyeglasses, which benefits our students."

This year, the Lions Club added a collection weekend for hurricane relief and raised an additional $1,100 with the assistance of Leo Club members. All proceeds will go to the Lions Club International Foundation, with specific instructions to be used for hurricane relief in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

"The White Cane collections are great opportunities for our members to participate with our sponsors in the Lions Club and also to experience firsthand the wonderful generosity of our neighbors in the Duanesburg community," Kanarkiewicz said.

White Cane Day is a longstanding Lions Club event. The Leo Club conducts a variety of charitable activities throughout the year.
