Schenectady County Sheriff’s Deputy David Smith joined the Duanesburg Central School District in December to serve as the district’s second school resource officer. He will be stationed at Duanesburg Elementary School, while Deputy Eric Reyell will continue to be based out of the Jr.-Sr. High School building. Smith has been with the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office for almost two years, and before that, served five years with the City of Albany Police Department.
“One of the main reasons I applied to become an SRO was to have the opportunity to learn a different aspect of policing, and learn to work with the community on a different level,” Smith said. “As a father of three children, ages 3-18, I think I bring a unique perspective to my work as an SRO. I’m excited to get to know the families at DES, and hope that I have a positive influence on them and their children.”
Deputy Smith grew up in Alcove, NY (Albany County), and attended Ravena Coeymans Selkirk Central Schools, from which he graduated in 2001.
Deputy Smith has had a very interesting career path on his way to becoming a police officer. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, has worked in many different areas of the construction field, been a corrections officer, a landscaper, and even worked at a deli!
When he’s not working, Deputy Smith spends as much time as possible with his wife Kristen and children Emma (age 18), Liam (age 16), and Dalton (age 3). In their spare time, they like to travel and take in baseball games in Boston where they partake in a little family rivalry. His wife and son are Red Sox fans, but Deputy Smith is a proud Yankees fan! The family also enjoy visiting aquariums and Adirondack Animal Land, and traveling to the Mirror Lake/Lake Placid during the fall.
Welcome to DCS, Deputy Smith! We are happy to have you part of the team, and eager to show you what Eagle Pride is all about.
